A wet day on the plateau
Heavy rain, storms or strong gusts are forecast. The hairpin road is slower in rain, the viewpoints will show little and the waterfall path turns to mud. The geopark, the rhumerie and Curious Mauritius still work in rain.

Open every day including Sundays and public holidays, except during cyclone warnings and very heavy rain. The last ticket is sold at 17:00 from October to May.

One ticket covers the coloured earth, both waterfall viewpoints and the giant tortoise enclosure. Payment in Mauritian rupees by cash or card; foreign cash is not accepted. Resident rates need an ID card or residence permit at the gate.

Guided visit and tasting Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays. No booking is needed for the standard visit; expect about 20 minutes’ wait at reception. Visitors aged 16 and 17 pay a lower rate for the visit. The L’Alchimiste restaurant serves lunch Monday to Saturday from 11:30 to 15:30.

Guided walkway departures run hourly from 09:30 to 16:00 and the site closes at 17:00; the reserve recommends arriving before 14:30. Online booking is 10% cheaper and not required.

Cloud on the plateau does not close Chamarel. Use the visibility forecast to choose a clearer window for the viewpoints. Consider Curious Mauritius for a covered stop, and check visitor notices before travelling in heavy rain.

Waterfall in low flow. Little rain over the catchment recently. Expect a thin fall, typical of the dry months. Come for the earth, the views and the rum, and treat the fall as a bonus. 5 mm in the last 24 hours, 8 mm in 7 days, 93 mm in 30 days over the catchment.
Are the Black River Gorges viewpoints clear today?
